In Critias 116 we read that the temple of Poseidon on Atlantis was fortified with a citadel. It is difficult to explain exactly what a citadel is. But it is a reinforcement, for example extra walls that surround a temple. This citadel on Atlantis was clad in the mysterious metal aurichalcum. Was this a reference to the Nicanor Gate in Jerusalem? The gate had been donated to Jerusalem by an Alexandrian Jew named Nicanor. This gate was made of Corinthian bronze which was an alloy of gold, silver and copper. According to some sources, this Nicanor gate was the same as the Beautiful Gate where the apostle Peter healed a blind beggar in Acts 3:3-9. In 1902, the remains of the children of Nicanor were found in a cave of Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. It may well be that Nicanor moved with the gate to Jerusalem.
