Much had been written about men putting charming women on pedestals. I used to do this. Especially in highschool some girls were simply unreachable and some of those some girls seemd to enjoy it when nutcases as I were not allwed to come closer to them than five meters. As if they wanted to show me: you have to know what is your place. Pedestals corrupt the communication with the other sex. If I was in love or put a woman on a pedestal it was hardly impossible to have a healthy communication with her, if there was a communication at all. The other way around was also the case. Some very charming girls who would never notice me, came crying to my door because they were terribly in love with one of my friends.
Isn’t it the same what the church had done to the saints? Jesus’ mother Mary is presented as a goddess in most catholic churches. I remember that the Dutch or even European windsurf hype started in the 1980’s in Almelo where those surfboards were made. The textile industries was an expiring case so the factories had too be innovative and find something different than making textile. Someone came up withg the idea of making surfboards. It worked. It worked so good that our factory was not able to make so many surfboards as what the market asked for. Someone showed a documentary of Stephan van den Berg, who was the wind surf champion of the 1980’s. Our factory said that if nutcases as I watched Stephan playing around with his surfboard on the ocean waves no one would ever buy a surfboard anymore. What stephan did was simply too overambitious for odd nutcases as I. It was the same with buying an electric guitar. Everyone would imitate Eddy Van Halen in the 1980’s but no one could. So we bought an electric guitar, used it three times and put it somewhere in a corner of our room, to never touch it again.
Did the church put Gods word too much on a pedestal for ordinary humans as I am? If I think of our church fathers like Augustine I think of highly intellectual men who had dedicated their lives to the Word of God. This sounds a bridge too far for a loudmouth from Almelo who is dreaming at night about his woman teacher. Still, people like Daniel, John, Peter or even Jesus’ mother were ordinary persons like you and me until some angel brought a message to them, carrying a divine task for them. Let us de-sanctify pop stars, football hero’s, women and last but not least, all those saints in the Bible.
